The expression of a number of enzymes involved in drug metabolism, membrane function etc. was compared in hyperplastic and neoplastic lesions of the rat bladder and in human bladder tumours. Transitional cell carcinomas (TCC) in both rat and Man were characterized by decreased alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and increased gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), beta-glucuronidase (beta-G1), succinate dehydrogenase (SD) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) activities. Protection effect of endurance training against reoxygenation-induced injuries in rat heart

Endurance training by swimming (219-229 h) resulted in a significant protection against hypoxia/reoxygenation-induced injuries in Langendorff-perfused rat hearts. The protection was manifested as improved flow characteristics and a smaller release of creatine kinase into the perfusate. The concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) was lower in the trained than in the respective control hearts. The trained hearts also showed a lower reoxygenation-induced increase in TBARS. The myocardium of the right ventricle and that of the left subepimyocardium were the most affected by reoxygenation. ImBlutserum von 48Psoriasis vulgaris-Kranken konnte, weitgehend in Abhangigkeit von der Ausdehnung und Akuitat der Hauterscheinungen, eineErhohung derGlucose-6-Phosphat-Dehydrogenase nachgewiesen werden. Dieser Befund wird vergleichend mit den Ergebnissen bei Gesunden und anderen Hautkranken diskutiert und als psoriasistypisches, nicht aber psoriasisspezifisches Phanomen gewertet, fur dessen Zustandekommen auf Grund der bisherigen Untersuchungen eine Erklarung nicht gegeben werden kann, wenngleich im Hinblick auf das Vorkommen von Pentosen in pathologisch veranderter Psoriasis-Haut zu diesem, den Pentose-Cyclus einleitenden Enzym eine hypothetische Verbindung gegeben scheint.

Increased susceptibility to lipid peroxidation in skeletal muscles of dystrophic hamsters.

The results showed that the total content of lipids, which could be peroxidized with Fe(2 +)/ascorbate stimulation in vitro, was 45.4% and 53.7% higher than normal in the dystrophic hamster muscle at the age of 1 and 3 months, respectively. Correspondingly, the susceptibility to lipid peroxidation (stimulated by ADP-chelated iron at 37 degrees C) was 38.6-74.3% higher in dystrophic muscles. The increases were not related to necrotic lesions and inflammation observed. The activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, glutathione reductase, thioredoxin reductase and catalase were increased in dystrophic muscles but those of superoxide dismutases and glutathione peroxidase were unaffected.

The aim of the study was to determine a biochemical basis for the augmented oxidative metabolism found in mononuclear leukocytes (MNL) of patients with active psoriasis. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is known to inhibit glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PDH). We determined the activity of G-6-PDH as well as the penetration and metabolism of DHEA - diminished plasma concentrations of which have been found in psoriatics previously - in 16 patients with active psoriasis and 16 controls. The activities of some antioxidative and hexose monophosphate shunt enzymes, as well as of 2 hydrolases were studied in skeletal muscle biopsy specimens taken from 39 patients with neuromuscular diseases and from 15 controls. The activity of Se-dependent glutathione peroxidase was higher in patients with congenital myotonia, whereas in the other diagnostic groups this enzyme activity was the same as in the controls. The Se-independent and total glutathione peroxidase activity of patients in the various diagnostic groups did not differ from the controls.
